Ever wonder why the pyramids were built? The pyramids are massive structures made by the ancient egyptians long ago. The pyramids are very big and bold, they have many untold treasures inside, and are very mysterious. In the beginning, the pyramids were built for the tombs of the pharaohs. The ancient egyptians thought that the pharaoh was the sun god’s son. With a king as a god that would live forever, Egypt would love all the things the god could give. To make sure the pharaoh's spirit would not die, the body had to be protected. Far inside the pyramid is the chamber of the king. There was a town at Kahun, and the workers who worked on the pyramids lived there (Morley). Most of the pharaohs probably did the same(Morley 18). Around the town was a closely guarded gate with a brick wall. Archeologists have found lots of animal bones, which meant that many people were fed meat daily (Bingham 19). The center of the town was a market where people would have gotten goods from other people around the village (Morley 22). The workers were well treated at the town, they were given food and drinks, a time to rest, and a place to stay and live (Bingham 20). On the separate part of the town was where the workers were housed, and only some had four rooms in the house (Morley 18). The manufacturers who made things for the town also made things needed for the pyramid. In the Old Kingdom, pyramids were only made of stone, after the pyramids were made of stone and brick. The huge blocks for the pyramids were shaped by stoneworkers, they also made little jars and vases by hollowing out large stone (Morley 24). The mummified pharaohs traveled on a funeral boat to get to the tomb in their pyramids but, the body had to be mummified or his spirit would not notice him in the afterlife. The brain was taken out through the nose shortly after death and, on the left side of the body an opening was made with a knife to take the organs out. Then the body was cleaned and covered in linen strips (Bingham 22,28). When the funeral finally came the mummy was brought to the mortuary temple in its coffin and, the mummy got all its senses back when the ceremony started. So when the mummy was in the afterlife he would be able to move, speak, and eat. When the ceremony was done the coffin was dragged up a rap into the pyramid. When the pharaoh had finished building his pyramid his costs did not end. The pharaoh gave the priests income of his mortuary temple. The pharaoh did this so he could keep his cult forever.
