The Influence Of Sexual Orientation

Sexual orientation has sparked a lot of debate and a lot of change in the recent years of our country. The Phelps, along with Michael Moore, and the mentioned articles all helped to spark this movement. Now the ideas on homosexuals in this country are beginning to shift from hate to love. Growing up in Topeka, KS I knew most of the information about the Phelps before entering this class. The Phelps are a group of people who spread hate instead of love. Not only do they discriminate against people who are homosexual, but they shine a negative light on the Christian and Baptist name. I think it is quite obvious that the Phelps are using hate speech, because everything they preach is completely driven by hate. They choose certain parts of the …show more content…
I am happy to see the great strides we have made since many of these articles were written. When reading, I was especially interested in how homosexuals were discriminated against in the public school system. After reading that one school district chose to ban all non educational clubs rather than allowing a gay alliance club, I really opened my eyes. I did not realize how much hate was being shown toward homosexuals. They should be allowed to have a club and a support group just as any other group of people. I also couldn’t believe that they found it more beneficial to their students to ban non academic clubs, which look great on college and job resumes, then to just allow one more controversial club. For goodness sakes, they allowed a club to be made strictly to eat beef in, yet these students were denied a chance to have a support group as they struggled with their sexual identity in public school. When I continued in the readings, I came across the article about gay tolerance in schools, and found the information gathered in the study very upsetting. Homosexual students report missing school due to feeling unsafe, and still there is no policy banning discrimination based on sexual orientation. I understand that many people do not agree with gay rights, however, no matter what a child’s sexual orientation is, they should not be scared to get an education. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Since 1991 the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas has preached their hatred towards jews, catholics, homosexuals, and numerous funerals. Over the years the Westboro Church has formed into a hate group more than a religion. The church was founded by Fred Phelps. The church started off as a normal southern baptist church back when it was founded in the 1950’s. But as time went on Fred preached his beliefs to his small group of his parishioners.…

While reviewing the article “When You Are a Gay Boy in America” by Danny Zaccagnino, I learned about many of the positive aspects of the LBGTQ community, while also gaining an understanding of what it is like to live a day in that community. I was entertained throughout the majority of the article and in the end, I could not be happier that he found his angel. While the ending was enjoyable, it was heartbreaking to see some the things he went through and how scary it could be for him at times. One thing that I am taking away from this article is that the technology and the media can often times ruin things for many people. There were two instances in the article that the boy received negative attention from the media, which stemmed from the…

In addition, instructional materials and activities that are taught or seen around the school should not exclude, ridicule, or victimize against any student based on sexual preference or sexual identification. Principals should also prepare for meeting with nontraditional families and ensure inclusion of the school community members as well. Including more gender-neutral language is another change that has impacted instructors since not adhering or accepting the new social structure of homogeneity can be considered an unlawful defilement of their identity. With that said, by allowing a…

I agree with you the University is not failing to respect equality rights about sexual orientation. The primary cause is that Trinity Western is a private, Christian faith-based university legislated by British Columbia to aid the public. And the mission of this University is developing “Godly Christian leaders” while providing many educational programs. I can get a line here that two different rights under the Charter are colliding with each other. The equality right for lesbian or gay and freedom of rights to practice religion for TRU.…

Briana Phillips Keith Payne Honors Civics & Economics November 23, 2015 Should Gays Be Allowed To Openly Serve in The U.S. Military? Gays have been fighting for their equal rights since the beginning of time. People seem to always have a problem with homosexuals serving our U.S. military whether they are Christian or Atheist, although they do not seem to care as long as they don’t know about the person’s sexual preference. People are going to want to serve their country no matter their sexual preference.…

“Recent court decisions and guidelines from the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) make it clear that school districts must take action to protect gay students…” (Jones). “ Title IX prohibits harassing conduct of a sexual nature, such as targeting a lesbian student for physical or sexual advances, if such conduct creates a hostile environment” (Jones). These two legislations were not only important in those times but also in today's. With these homosexual students can have a safer environment in which to learn and interact which helped these students feel more comfortable in society. These changes also helped on a larger scale as the average age for a person to come out dropped from twenty in 1979 to 13 in 1998 (Jones).…

The biological theory of the origin of sexual orientation proposes various ideas about the etiology of this sexual behavior. One of the most famous is called the Neurohormonal Theory. For instance, Bailey, Dunne, and Martin describe this theory by saying that “homosexual people have been subject to atypical levels of hormones in development [in the womb], thus causing sex-atypical neural differentiation” (524). In addition, Throckmorton states that “in straight men, the right hemisphere is greater than the left and in women, they are equal…the hemispheres are the same size in gay men and for lesbians, the right is larger than the left” (“Study Examines” 2). On top of that, Diamond describes different studies that revealed significant differences…

Our society’s perception of sex and sexuality is influenced by various factors, such as the media, culture, and religion. The media influences our perception of sex by oversexualizing women and over masculinizing men in advertisements, music videos, television, and film. Female models and actresses may dress or act in a provocative manner to gain attention by the media and particularly from men. Women may be influenced to imitate these behaviors, or even exaggerate their sexuality, to appear desirable to men. Women may also feel unconfident when comparing their bodies to those seen in the media, creating an unhealthy perception of their sexuality.…
