Although not quite sure what it was or why, I have always felt led towards public service. In every capacity in which I have been employed, some element of servitude has always tugged at me. Public servants have a fundamental duty to serve mankind, to respect the rights of men to liberty and equality and to act responsibly with respect to the ethical obligations as set forth in the United States Constitution. Therefore, in pursuit of a successful career in public administration and the realization of my mission, I must equip myself with the knowledge, skills and ability that reflect a commitment to public service and, principles which replicate the highest ethical standards.

For instance, as a licensed real estate professional I am held to an ethical code that was created to “help govern the behavior of Realtor members and to increase the level of competence and standards of practice among Realtors” (Bell, 2014). Acknowledging this code indicates that I understand my professional responsibility to uphold the laws, regulations and standards of the bureau; and, I will conduct myself ethically, honestly and with integrity in my dealings with and on behalf of the public. Likewise, the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) “Code of Ethics” provides procedural requirements for Public Administrators.
Being a responsible administrator is an important part of my strategy and forms the essential foundation on which I carry out my responsibilities. Therefore, as a responsible public administrator, I must ensure that my actions align with the best interest of the organization as well as the public. Additionally, ethical behavior should not just be a reaction to regulations or legal compliance, but a means of doing business that gives citizens, coworkers, and communities the confidence that they are working with an ethical organization that is not prepared to compromise on its integrity just to achieve its objectives.
