Pursuit Of Happiness Movie Reflection

The Pursuit of Happyness elicited various emotions for me while I was watching it: sadness, happiness, relief, stress, and empathy for both Chris Gardner and his son. After I finished the movie, I felt a connection between these two characters for sharing such vulnerable moments through his journey. After drawing both genograms, there were some common struggles when comparing the two. My mother only attended college for 2 years, and did not earn a college degree, similar to Chris and his educational background. Although never stated in the movie that he didn’t have a college degree, it eluded to the fact that he lacked one when he first showed interest in the stock market company. My mother had to work her way up with the company that she worked for, and Chris did the same. He started out as an intern and progressed from there. A similar pattern of life between the two genograms was the absence of a parent for both Christopher and I. I had an inconsistent relationship with my father growing up, and Christopher started to have an inconsistent relationship with his mother when she moved away when he was 5 years old. He is an African American male, in a lower socioeconomic class, who is uneducated and a single father. Chris started being oppressed by society from the moment he was born. He is African American, and a person of color experiences barriers that white people do not face. When watching the movie, it appeared that Chris was the only African American intern in his class, and also within the company. The men who held powerful roles within the company, specifically the ones who interviewed him, were all white. As an intern, he was the only one who was chosen to get the coffee for his boss, or had to move his boss’ car.
