The Pursuit of Happiness I was sitting in Composition class when I received news that would make my heart drop and stomach churn. My phone lit up with a text from my boyfriend informing me that he cheated on me the night before. While I wished that this news was a cruel April Fool’s joke, I knew it was not. In that exact moment, I felt an ultimate sense of betrayal and anger at a person I once trusted. Unfortunately, I am not the only one who has felt this way before. Everyone has experienced or will experience a moment in their life where happiness is the furthest thing from their mind. Coping with negative emotions and mindsets is incredibly challenging; however, it is crucial in the healing process. Despite negative situations a person may face in their lifetime, happiness is still attainable. First off, everyone is different; therefore, it is impossible to define happiness in a general sense. However, neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and even Buddhist monks explain that a feeling of joy is closely related with the feeling of satisfaction or contentment (Flora). Happiness does not have a general definition; however, everyone is able to pursue it in their own way. Although one may encounter challenging obstacles in life, it is important to learn from them and try to make the most of the situation. Above all, if life is unsatisfactory, one must be willing to make a change. Although the breakup with my boyfriend was difficult, I can say that I have learned a lot from the situation.
