The Missouri Compromise was and effort by the congress to keep the country unified. The compromise dictated that Missouri could enter the country as a slave state but that Maine could split off from Massachusetts as a free state. It also impacted the Louisiana purchase by prohibiting slavery above the Northern latitude of 36 degrees 30’N EXCEPT for Missouri.
