The Purpose Of The Liver Lab

Improved Essays
The purpose of the liver lab was to understand how enzymes, more specifically catalase, break down poisonous chemicals, hydrogen peroxide. In the lab we used multiple reactants, temperatures, and pH levels. For the tissues and enzymes we used livers, new, used, cold, warm and boiled, chicken breasts, potatoes, and apples. We also used hydrogen peroxide, warm and cold, acidic and basic, and used liquid from a reaction. Hydrogen peroxide acts as a substrate for the enzymes. The reactants were the catalyst of different tissues and the variations of hydrogen peroxide. When combined, the product was water, oxygen, and any dead cells left in the liquid due to the reaction. In trial 1, we used liver and hydrogen peroxide. This was our control trial.

The reactants that enzyme act upon with the substrate and the enzyme will bind together into the active site. The catalyst is important to the enzyme that breaks down the hydrogen peroxide and oxygen gas, where the rate of reaction of the catalyst will increase the temperature until it has reached the optimum temperature above 37°C is reached. If the optimum temperature has reached above 37°C then the kinetic energy and substrate molecules will begin to denature. The purpose of the lab was to determine the effects different temperature in yeast and hydrogen peroxide in a catalyst enzyme on reaction rate. There were many sources of errors that occur in the lab from having just one trial, using the same thermometer for each solution and inaccurate timing.…

Conclusion The Albumin degradation experiment was used to see how fast a chemical reaction occurs when adding enzymes. In the results of the experiment we saw how the three tubes which had pepsin were faster than the one without pepsin. This differed from our hypothesis which stated the tube that only contained Pepsin would degrade the most. We also saw there was a difference between the sample that had sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid.…

The molecule is broken down by the body, but it is also produced by organisms, especially humans. According to Niethammer (2009), hydrogen is produced in three main places in the body; the lungs, thyroid gland, and gut. It is crucial that the body contains catalase at an optimum temperature to breakdown the hydrogen peroxide produced as quickly as possible. The body maintains a constant temperature around 37°C to keep the enzymes working as efficiently as possible. Most mammals keep a body temperature around this temperature to help keep the rate of catalase and other enzyme reactions constant and…

Enzymes are protein molecules that significantly speed up the rate of virtually all of the chemical reactions that take place within the cell. In the following lab was to examine an enzyme that is found in pineapples. That enzyme is bromelain its breaks down protein into their protein into their amino acid by a process of hydrolysis. They are found in tropical areas like Hawaii, Thailand, and Brazil. For the first experiment the hypothesis was that the when gelatin was added to the water, fresh pineapple juice, and canned pineapple juice and submerged into the ice chest the solutions would turn into Jell-O.…

In this lab we learned the basics of enzymes and how they work. We were able to perform a quantitative assay of the activity of an enzyme in a tissue extract using a spectrophotometer. Also, we had to organize the data that was provided into tables and graphs so we could have the ability to test a few hypotheses. For example, we tested the whether the rate of the reaction was influenced by enzyme concentration, whether the activity of the enzyme was influenced by temperature and also too see if the activity of the enzyme was influenced by the pH of the solution, which you will then see the results on the graphs and charts that I provided. In figure one we show results of the trial run from the enzyme activity where the absorbance was at 500nm.…

Introduction: Enzymes are biological molecules that act as a catalyst to significantly speed up the rate of the chemical reactions that take place within cells without being used up in the process. According to the website, www.ducksters.com, “enzymes are special types of proteins. Like all proteins, enzymes are made from strings of amino acids. The function of the enzyme is determined by the sequence of amino acids, types of amino acids, and the shape of the string.” Along with this we need to know about a peroxidase; “A peroxidase is one of a number of enzymes that act as catalysts to allow a variety of biological processes to take place.…

Introduction: Enzymes have a huge effect on the human body and other organisms. Enzymes are catalysts that are used to accelerate the reaction process by lowering the activation energy. For this experiment the catechol oxidase was extracted from potatoes. The enzyme is called catechol oxidase because the oxygen is reacting to catechol. Catechol oxidase causes the browning of the fruits and vegetables because the compound is toxic to the bacteria.…

Describe examples of three biological specimens that can be analyzed using toxicology to provide evidence in a criminal case. Blood, urine, and liver. Blood can be analyzed is often the specimen of choice for detecting, quantifying and interpreting drugs and other toxicant concentrations. Concentrations of drugs and other toxicants in blood may be useful for establishing recent drug ingestion and to determine the effect of a drug on the deceased at the time of death, or at the time the blood was taken. Urine is the most common sample used for drug testing in the workplace, but it is not always available for post-mortem testing.…

Our cells usually make toxic byproducts however they use enzymes to break them down into harmless chemicals. When an excess amount of H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) is formed in the cell during metabolism/cell respiration catalase enzymes are utilized to break down the toxic chemical into oxygen gas and water. An experiment was conducted was to see if the Ph level affected the rate of which the catalase broke down hydrogen peroxide. A hypothesis was created, which stated that if the ph was lower than the control than the rate of hydrogen peroxide decomposition would be greater. In the experiment there were three trials, a control, a high level ph, and a low level…

Abstract The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether the temperature can affect the reaction rate of enzyme activity. The enzyme activity was measured by five different temperatures, separated in tubes which later got measured by their height of foam after 10 minutes. Freshly-prepared potato juice was used as the enzyme for catalase. Since temperature is measured by the kinetic energy of molecules, the higher the temperature, the more movement of molecules.…
