The purpose of the five canons is to help the speaker in creating a persuasive message or argument. The first canon is invention, the process of developing your argument. It helps to discover the best available means of persuasion by the use of ethos, pathos, and logos. The second canon is arrangement, organization, having the speech in the correct order to ensure maximum persuasion. Third canon is style, how are you going to present your speech. It is the way you write and construct your ideas so people will want to listen to you and understand you. Memory, the fourth canon, is about learning and memorizing the speech without needing a “crutch”, because it weakens a speaker's credibility and the audience's confidence in you as the speaker.
