The true purpose of public education in the United States has become more transparent in society today. Students are fed the idea that going to school and following orders will eventually lead them on to a path of future success and accomplishment. Public education poses as an outstanding quality of our country in the fact that anyone can become anything their heart desires through the power of education. John Gatto, an American author and former school teacher argues in his writing "Against School" that public education is designed to keep the American people conformed to society. Through personal experiences I can agree with Gatto and conclude that the purpose of public education is to keep Americans controlled, predictable, and obedient through consumerism, social roles, adaptation, and manipulation.

Gatto argues, making children as alike as possible helps those who wish to harness and manipulate our country as a whole (3). When our country 's youth is deemed predictable and alike it makes us more vulnerable to people who wish to take advantage of our demographic including corporations and our own government. Touching back on my experience with the standardization of Apple 's Iphone in modern society, I can truthfully say that most of my peers were similar in the way that they were all consumers. The idea of consumerism basically brainwashed everyone to mindlessly follow whatever corporations threw at us. Back when I was going through high school, I didn’t think about any political or social matters. All that mattered to me was being popular and showing off material possessions. A cloud of social media and consumerism distracted us from the real problems our country had. With all out country 's youth being absorbed in pop culture/media it made us easily controllable and
