Job Safety Analysis
As a consultant, sometime I perform specific evaluations or projects the company does not have time or expertise to perform. Occasionally a production manufacture may use my services to evaluate a job task, listing all hazards, potential, and precautions. By having an outside evaluation, items which might have been overlooked, as everyday event (normal) are realized and identified.
The purpose of a Job Safety Analysis is to achieve Incident Free Operations. When an item is identified where a person has the potential of exposure to injury, illness or disease it must listed as a Hazard.
Potential Hazards include: Struck By, Struck Against, Contacted By, Caught On, Caught In, Caught Between, Fall to Below, Overexertion, …show more content…
The solutions include: the preferred method of “Eliminating the hazard”, by removing the cause of the hazard. Next choice is “Substitution” to a safer solution. Then “Engineering” is the next selection, creating barriers from the hazard or maintenance procedure. Followed by, “Isolation” by relocating or changing the operation. Not ideal, however “Administrative” is the next choice by written or verbal procedure. Last resort, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) ensuring personal is properly trained and fitted for the PPE.
Once the task, and requirements have been reviewed the JSA can start. A typical JSA will be performed by:
1. Locate the job for analysis. Verify by asking, if not escorted.
2. Introduce self to worker. Inform the worker you are observing for safety issues and not job performance.
3. Ask the worker:
a. What type of training did worker receive for the job?
b. Are the job procedures accessible to review?
c. When the last time procedures was reviewed by the worker?
d. Does worker know what the procedure for an emergency, such as
• Hard stopping equipment
• Emergency exit
• Site meeting location?
e. Is any part of the equipment in need of repair?

• Is hearing protection used?
a. What type: ear buds, headphones or other?
• Communication is hindered?
g. Are Emergency Exits marked? Unobstructed?
h. Are confined spaces mark “Confined Space – Entry By Permit Only”
• Oxygen and/or Fume Meter available?
• Procedure for/not entry understood?
i. Is ventilation adequate?
j. Are motorized vehicles (forklift, golf carts, etc) daily inspection checklist complete?
k. Are workers were proper clothing and PPE for job?
l. Any jewelry hazards?
m. Worker station engineered to prevent back or wrist injuries?
5. Note worker process/task steps as they occur. Not to detailed.
a. Review steps later with employee, for verification.
6. Examine the worker steps and process to evaluate potential, or known hazards, some considerations might include noting:
a. Is the process properly organized to prevent fatigue?
b. Does work have adequate egress for emergency?
c. Is workstation level? Any steps?
d. Eye and Shower stations within safe distance?
e. Does shower station need temperate water due to climate conditions?
f. PPE appropriate for the job.
g. Equipment moving parts properly guarded?
h. Does worker have to reach over moving parts?
