Continuing to research and understand why recreational drug use can not coincide with a mature Christian life, we must understand what a mature Christian’s purpose is. There are many people who think that one can be a mature Christian and still be involved in earthly pleasures, but this false idea is disproven by 2 Timothy 2:4 when it states, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” Through this statement, we can see that a Christian has a mission and it is to serve. To understand a Christian’s purpose in life we must comprehend in what capacity he is to serve.

In John 4:19-23 with the women at the well Jesus’ reveals key idea to what worship is. The Greek word that is used for worship in that passage means to give homage or respect that is owed to someone in power over your position. (Blue Letter) But Christian’s aren’t just called worshippers, but to be holy as God is, as we see in 1 Peter 1:15. The definition of this word holy by Webster 's Third New International Dictionary: of the English Language is “Set apart and dedicated to the service or worship of God.” Donald Grey Barnhouse in his book God’s Methods of Holy Living, says “God demands that we give Him holiness equal to His own.”He also states that “ When a Christian begins to look for emotional experiences instead of looking for the quiet application of the Word to the heart by the Holy Spirit, he is on the wrong track.”(God’s 114) This gives us an important insight as to the focus of a mature Christian’s approach to worshipping God. He is focusing entirely on God and not allowing anything else from this world to distract him. We see this principle in 2 Timothy 2:21 where Christians are called to be set apart for the work of God and in Philippians 1:11 where they are called to glorify or worship God. In addition to worshipping God a believer is called to be a witness or an image bearer for God and His character. We see this in Genesis 1:27 and Colossians 3:10 where it says that we were made in the image of God. From the beginning of our existence God has had a special role for mankind to play and we see that it is to carry His image. It is incredible how God has chosen so many different yet complementary capacities in which a mature Christian can fulfill his purpose, but the question remaining is this. do these characteristics of service fit with recreational drug use?
