If you were given the opportunity to commit any crime of choice without facing the repercussion of your acts, what would you choose to do? In a futuristic America, in the year 2020, all crime is legalized one night of the year for a twelve hour period. “The Purge” is a movie directed by James DeMonaco that is centrally placed in 2022 where the economic growth is high and homelessness is lower that it has ever been. There is still one persistent issue, the crime rate is at an all time high and prisons are beyond overcrowded. The lighting seemed very off to me. At times it was either too bright or too dim. The camera work could have been better as well. This was the main factor which for me brought the ratings down. It doesn’t feel like you’re watching an actual movie, it seems like it was produced by more of an amateur. The set design failed to be associated with the rich suburban 2022 theme. Apart from the large house and futuristic security system, there was no obvious details that showed it was a wealthy house, like for example, a chandelier.
The acting seemed very scripted and didn’t seem to be as natural. And upon directing the movie, the scene with Zoey and Henry being intimate seemed like it wasn’t very unnecessary. “The Purge” was a very unoriginal movie with many uses of cliches such as: children not listening to their parents, the family splitting up in a crisis, and hiding in dark basements. Not everyone can handle to protect themselves and their families. “The Purge”grants the wealthy safety while risking the security of those who are homeless or poor as they are the main targets of the purges and have no adequate resources to protect themselves. I give “The Purge” a rating of 1.5 stars. The concept of the idea was original and fresh but due to the lack of directing staying true to the plot’s theme, poor script, bad acting, etc, this movie really plunged.
