Throughout life, many individuals suffer from being self-conscious about their looks or even their overall personality. In the chapter, The Puppeteer, Bob Goff expounds on the time he purchased an expensive oil painting he had wanted for some time (145). However, when Goff goes to pick up said painting, the man advises him to hide the real one and instead hang up a fake painting to ensure the safety. Goff, of course, disagreed with this since he had waited for so long to purchase the painting (147). Goff proudly hung the picture up in his home where, one day, a rubber band was shot at it and put a hole in it (148). Although the painting was now ruined, at least the value, Goff explains this as the way we, as Christians, are supposed to be.

First though is to not let anyone change who I am. God created everyone differently so there should be no reason for me to want to change for the benefit of someone else. Similar to the painting with the hole, everyone also has flaws they cannot change so expecting them to will do no one any good. Treating everyone fairly and with love is top priority. Secondly, I need to not be afraid to stand up for my beliefs and understandings. If Goff can decide to put up the real painting, even though it is risky, I should be able to speak my mind if the need is there. I need to learn to teach others to love God like I do and to show them his love as well. God does not want us to sit by and watch as people are killed and persecuted simply because we are afraid of what people will think of us or that we may offend someone. God has called us to be disciples and that will require speaking up and not backing down for anyone. Thirdly, I learned that good things are worth the wait. Bod Goff was not able to run out and buy that painting the very first time he saw it. No, he had to wait and save the money in order to be able to. Many things in life are similar to this scenario. Whether it be a job opportunity once college is done or even an option of traveling with a group on a Go Encounter trip. Patience is a virtue that everyone needs to have and work on, me especially. Without it, nothing will be completed in the way
