Public Education System

The public education system needs to be reformed for the present and future students. In the article “Against School,” John Gatto writes about how the public education system currently established has declined in building character for the students in class. The public education system uses cell block style where students take six classes a day for five days a week while going to school for nine months year round. This causes both the teachers and the students to become bored with education. The teachers blame the students for being rude and unsupportive of them, whereas the students blame the teachers for giving the same material over and over when they would like to do something different. Students and teachers should be encouraged to approach education in a different way instead of using the same cell block style they currently use. Students are forced to take a standardized test to record what they have learned throughout the school year but in the United States, the standardized testing scores have scored low and keeps declining each year (Zinsmeister). Students should have fun while learning but not to the extent where academic classes are replaced by non-academic courses. If students are approached with a positive mindset to education they can improve on test scores. It is best that they are tested on their understanding and application of a key concept rather than being tested on what they memorized. Students are taught basic education that may be necessary in the real world but are not challenged to think critically nor outside of the box. They are basically trained to have the same generic answer as their peers and anything different is viewed as incorrect. According to Ronny Erez, a journalist of the Prufrock Press, “The main condition is freedom—freedom to raise original unorthodox ideas, freedom to deal with complex issues even when the student’s body of knowledge is insufficient, and, most importantly, freedom to fail.” In addition, they are educated about past views adults had, rather than encouraged to formulate their own view or opinion. It is unfortunate that when public schools attempt to teach diverse and possibly controversial material. They are criticized, curriculum is forcibly changed, and in extreme cases, the school may be shut down. Instead, educators should encourage individuality so the students can expand more on their creativity to learn more about themselves as a
