Drugs affect a person both mentally and physically because the body becomes dependent on an addicts substance of choice to function. People that abuse substances are likely to be using stimulants, depressants, narcotics, hallucinogens, or cannabis which can have terrible short and long term effects. A substance that has been abused for any length of time has the potential to cause withdraws symptoms in a person. This can happen with drugs that have been prescribed by a physician. Prescription drugs are known to be addictive when they are abused by not adhering to the instructions or obtained illegally. Drugs are hard on the body, there are many drug classifications with side effects, and there is potential in prescriptions for abuse.

Pain relievers are also a form of “opioids [which] can cause euphoria and are often used nonmedically, leading to overdose deaths” (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2015). Codeine can also be called Captain Cody which would be injected or swallowed if being used illegally. Hydrocodone or vike would be snorted, injected, or swallowed. Morphine or Miss White could be smoked, swallowed, or injected for an individual to get a high of it. These are just a few of the narcotics that could be prescribed for pain and that could be sold on the street. This is what turns them into nonmedical use narcotics. The short term of these are “pain relief, drowsiness, nausea, constipation, euphoria, confusion, slowed breathing, [and] death” (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2015). The withdraw of narcotics is harsh as it contains “restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes with goose flesh bumps, (‘cold turkey”) leg movements” (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2015). Pain reliever forms of narcotics do not have the same kind of influence that they once had as the nation is more aware of the issue than it once was. Awareness has made it hard to obtain narcotics. The street names for these kinds of pills include yellow jacket, tranks, and Mexican valium. In the event that depressants are mixed with alcohol there is always the chance for death as it could further slow the heart rate and breathing to the point that the individual stops. Barbituates, Benzodiazepines, and sleep medications are all pill forms that induce “drowsiness, slurred speech, poor concentration, confusion, dizziness, problems with movement and memory, lowered blood sugar, [and] slowed breathing” (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2015). Withdraw of this kind of depressant can be likely to cause seizures and it is advised to seek medical advice before doing

    I agree with Quinone’s statement that doctors need to refrain from prescribing mass amount of highly-addictive pain-killing medicines to their patients.
