Conditioning your horse properly is very important to not only the health of the horse, but the welfare as well. It affects many important internal systems in their bodies as well as their comfort and stamina.
How do you know when your horse is in good condition? A horse in good condition when he is capable of doing an appropriate amount of work for his stage of training or discipline, and willingly does the work you are asking of him. He will also be thriving, and appear happy with bright eyes and a shiny healthy glow. There are many horses in poor condition as well. Exercising can increase muscles in size and strength. The muscle tissue is the fastest to condition and a great index to show which stage of fitness your horse is currently at. During exercise, warming up and cooling down are very important. During your warm up, the horse’s muscles will loosen up and this is when they work best. During your cool down, you are allowing the horse’s thermoregulation to get a head start to getting rid of the excess heat and relieve the horse of any future soreness. Conditioning puts a major effect on the horse’s internal systems including; the cardiovascular system, the digestive system, the support system, the nervous system, and many more. These are all vital systems that work together to keep your horse healthy and in good shape. During exercise, the lungs need to be capable of filling up with enough oxygen to help engage the muscle development and movement. With proper conditioning the muscles grow bigger, blood carries more nutrients and oxygen and the heart and lungs pump better.
Conditioning should always be done over a gradual period of several weeks. Conditioning can take time depending on the fitness level, discipline, and health of the horse. A fair guideline to follow is to begin week one with slower transitions and then gradually increase the work load as you go along week by week.
To put it briefly, we need to all do our best and keep these lovely animals in their best physical and mental state. Conditioning has many benefits such as being able to exercise longer and faster with shorter breaths, develop strong muscles and good postures, and to maintain a healthy
