There is several types of zoos located throughout the entire world. There are urban and suburban zoos which most individuals complain about due to their small enclosures. Most of these zoos are more common in Europe now days rather than the United States. Safari parks have become a very popular zoo to attend, the largest in the United States being in San Diego, California. Game reserves which have a large amount of land and they protect the ecosystems and native species. While it was common for hunting on these lands in the 1800s, now days they are often illegal to be on or allow “photo safaris” where people can now shoot photographs rather than shooting the animals. Lastly there are petting zoos. While most of these are found inside a zoo itself, others are located in their own private land and allow children of all ages to pet animals that they would otherwise not have access too. There is also specialized and conservation zoos, all whom specialize in certain species and take high regards to the health and safety to all animals (National Geographic). Almost every single one of these zoos give an educational awareness to the public. Teaching people that an animals life matters just as much as your own and we must do all we can to protect them instead of destroying what is left. Often numerous zoos work together with certain species in order to increase the population. Recently in the news the world has been introduced to the world’s most endangered species of turtles named the “Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle”. Prior to 2016, there were only four left in the entire world. To try to save the species from extinction China paired their only two turtles together in hopes of reproduction. After several clutches laid from the female it was determined that the male was unable to reproduce. As a last effort a reproductive biologist attempted artificial insemination to the last living female located in China which once again failed. They are still hopeful that they can alter the procedure and attempt again this year. Although the male specimen is slowly dwindling after the loss of one of two males located in Vietnam in January of 2016 (Turtle Survival Alliance). While it has been an ongoing battle for these zoos to continue the lifecycle of these exceptional turtles, it is because of these zoos there is still a chance they will avoid extinction.
