Insider binary, this is evident in all of his films, e.g. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character Scotty from Boogie Nights, Joaquin Phoenix’s character Freddie from The Master and Adam Sandler’s character Barry in Punch-Drunk Love (2002). All these characters are shown as different and unlike the rest of the characters in the film.
In terms of Sarris’ concentric circle theory, Paul Thomas Anderson does have principle characteristics of an auteur. In terms of technical competence, Anderson knows how to make a film, he plays a major part in them cause he writes and directs all his films, and has also produced most of his films. Regards to personal style, he uses the same camera shots/movements, e.g. the use on long shots, all of this films look and sound a particular way. Lastly, in terms of interior meaning, his films are mostly set in California, because that is where he is born and still lives now.
