In the 1970s, nutritionists and politicians drew the conclusion that whole milk is unhealthy, and low fat or skim milk should replace it. It started when Senator George McGovern, South Dakota, made a hearing to discuss whole-fat food and beverages and its possible links to heart disease in July 1976. In fact, from the 1960s-1970s, eight senators have died of heart failure, making this topic relevant for is time. This idea spread beyond Congress and the scientific community, to the public, and many people have become convinced that they “would live longer, and be thinner,” if they avoided whole-fat items, describes Gary Taubes, scientific author of Why We Get Fat. To start, whole milk provides for omega-3 than low-fat milk because it has more saturated fat. This vitamin’s fatty acids are healthy for the heart and are additionally linked to improve brain health and decrease the risks of cancer. However, many nutritionists argue whole milk is unhealthy for the heart because of saturated fat it contains in the 1970s. They believe that type of fat, which increases cholesterol levels, automatically increasing the risk of heart disease. Although, the nutritionists did not take into account that the saturated fat actually increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which actually protects the heart from disease. Even though the saturated fat raises low-density lipoprotein (LDL), this can only be dangerous to the heart and arteries by itself. The saturated fat cancels out its effect by transforming the tiny and condensed LDL particles to less dense and larger ones. So in the end, it does not have any negative health impacts as experts have suggested to the public. Secondly, drinking whole milk steadies blood sugar levels, which is beneficial to cardiovascular health. For example, ancient Greek Olympians used to eat a bowl of cream (containing the same saturated fat as whole milk does) to regulate their blood sugar before the athletic competitions. In addition, people who regularly consume omega-3 receive more sleep than those who do not. Since the vitamin battles anxiety, they are less likely to develop sleep disorders, allowing them to have proper sleep hours, finally leading to better mental and physical health. In addition, pregnant women are encouraged to consume omega-3 because of its developmental benefits for their babies. The children of those who follow this suggestion have lower risks of developing cognitive growth issues, including disorders like ADHD, cerebral palsy, and autism than of those who do not.
