Whaling has been a Native American tradition for over 2,000 years, incidentally the International Whaling Commission and many other nongovernmental organizations are trying to change that tradition. These types of organizations such as Greenpeace, IWC, and NAMMCO, entail transnationalist views. Whereas on the other hand, states like Japan, Norway, and Iceland, have nationalist perceptions. The transnationalist argument against whaling mainly deals with animal rights and also the impact on the environment of losing specific whale species. The nationalist’s argument on the other hand, involves experimentation and tradition in cultures, and supporting some economies. The two sides have compelling reasoning. For instance, in Point Hope, Alaska, hunting seals, belugas, walrus, and whales is what fuels the subsistence economy. Without hunting, the population would be paying twice as much in flown in groceries to feed their community. One bowhead whale is capable of feeding many different families for months. That capability saves the community of Point Hope money and the hardship of not having available food. There are eleven villages in Alaska that are ran on these principles and these principles are also followed in many Native American tribes. These villages and tribes are also very intact within the culture and continuing the tradition of whale hunting. The tradition of whale hunting has been around for 2,000 years in Point Hope, Alaska. This ritual was a necessity dating back to the earlier days when they could not transport food to Alaska. Whales were the primary food source and the whale meat was also used in different aspects such as bringing the community together for bonding and passing on
