The Pros And Cons Of Voodoo Science

Superior Essays
Everybody is familiar with a situation when something mystical and scary appears in the local newspaper, on radio, or on TV. Within last years, the first place of displaying “hot and shocking news from scientists” became the mighty Internet. Usually such hair-raising news can be found on low-level or free-download websites. These news have terrifying titles like “Scientist claimed 7 things in your fridge that cause cancer!”, or “Immediately get rid of this thing!”. However, title does not call the exact object of possible danger, which causes user to go by link on the other website full of ads. Next is placed short description of an “unexpected discovery”. However, experiment results, citations, or source links are missing. By my personal observations, young people usually disregard this kind of imposed news. Old people are more vulnerable to believe and be afraid of what they have just read.
The special term for the news with features stated above is “Voodoo Science”. Voodoo science, because it sticks in an uneducated person unproven fears like pins in a voodoo doll. The main method of voodoo science is to stun person with such an unexpected facts, force to believe instantly without demanding any evidences.
As an example, here is the claim that plastic bottles that contaminate water inside at freezing temperature. This claim possibly could pop up inside ads on one of free-download websites. …show more content…

The article “Goodbye, Bottled Water?”, by Gail Hennessey, was written to convince bottled water users to stop purchasing bottled water due to environmental impacts. Many people are confused about what paranormal actually means. To most, the term can be pictured with pale ghosts and walking zombies or aliens with their bright UFOs. A real definition, however, is explained as: "the scientific study of interactions between living organisms and their external environment that seem to transcend the known physical laws of nature. Parapsychology [the study of the paranormal phenomena] is a component of the broader study of consciousness and the mind" (Rhine 1). This explanation describes it as the study of supernatural and paranormal beings we are unable to see, hear, or use any other sense to locate these spirits.…

On average, thirsty customers in the U.S. throw away sixty million water bottles a day, and for every five water bottles consumed, one is recycled. The length of time for plastic water bottles to decompose is between four hundred and one thousand years. People may choose to drink bottled water over tap water with the misconception that it is the cleaner, tastier, or even a healthier choice. The rate at which people are consuming bottled water is causing landfills to be filled with approximately seventy-five percent of the plastic water bottles that are made. While bottled water sales increase, the consumption of tap water is the most advantageous choice for health benefits, environment conservation, and affordability as a choice for the consumer.…

Disposable plastic is so popular because it is so convenient to throw away after consumption. However, there are too many externalities. Although they are convenient, I have become much more conscious about using plastic in the past few years because of the negative effects it has on the environment. This has become a global issue; plastics have become such a staple in human lives that we are having trouble cutting back on its consumption. Plastics have spoiled us with convenience and ease that it is actually troublesome to stop using them.…

Paranormal tourism enables a person to want to understand or know something, which is unfamiliar, taboo, and potential seen as something “out of the ordinary”. It is a challenge for these curious tourists to find out the truth from these paranormal attractions, and whether or not to believe the legends and myths behind the “haunted” locations (Gaya, 2013). Nowadays, there are lots of touristic places, which have been used for public entertainment with the elements of horror; such as the international wax museum chain Madame Tus Saud’s “Chamber of Horror’s”, and ghost rides for children at various amusement parks (Deutsch, 2014). This curiosity is satisfied by the unknown and unusual factors, which can be seen as a “push” factor throughout the motivation process. It is essential to realize that there would be no demand without the…
