The V.A. is a health care system for the veterans that helps pay for their treatments and any needs they may have. But this health care only allows them to see the designated V.A. doctors or physician’s assistants. Patients that come to the center need certain types of care that only doctors can give them. Veterans feel better in the hands of doctors whose opinion is more satisfying than a PAs. The V.A. system is always extremely busy, and there is always a wait for them to see the doctors; for this reason, the PAs are seeing a patient a doctor normally would. Veterans have passed away because they were on the waiting list at the V.A. for so long. At a Senate hearing, Inspector General Richard Griffin says, “It’s one thing to be on a waiting list; it’s another for that to be the cause of death” (Katie 1). If the government gave the veterans a medical card that they could take with them to the doctors of their choice, it would cut the wait lists dramatically and give the veterans the fast and appropriate care they need. Some people have a hard time agreeing with the card system because it would cost more money to make the cards than if all the veterans went to the center for care. People come to realize it would actually save the VA from spending money on referrals when they do not have the time to give the patient the proper care because the system is so backlogged. This is unacceptable because the nation would not have the freedoms they do without these heroes. As a nation, we should, “…honor those who have worn the military uniform, sacrificing their personal freedoms to ensure our own. We are also indebted to the family members and caregivers of veterans for all they endure to support those who defend our country” (Hubbard 1). There should never be a homeless veteran on American soil. The government should do everything in their power to help give these veterans a great life after all of the scarifies they have made. Instead, the government sends money to other countries around the world when a disaster takes place. Many people think we should always send money when something bad happens across the world, but the problem with that is they are living in a country and overlooking the veterans’ care that is right in front of them. Why should the government send money to other countries when they cannot properly take care of their own people? Miss America 2000, Heather French, used her term to focus on the one-third of the homeless population that is veterans. When she was a college student, she volunteered at a homeless shelter where she met a homeless veteran who had been on the streets for almost twenty years! It outraged her that our government was not doing enough to keep our heroes off the streets. For example, “President Barack Obama requested $ 1
