Crimes done by pirates can lead to people losing their lives, physical harm or hostage-taking of seafarers, financial losses to ship owners, security costs, increased costs to consumers and producers, and damage to the marine environment. According to article 101 of UNCLOS, piracy is :
“(a) any illegal acts of violence or detention, or any act of depredation, committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship or a private aircraft, and directed:
(i) on the high seas, against another ship or aircraft, or against persons or property on board such ship or aircraft;
(ii) against a ship, aircraft, persons or property in a place outside the jurisdiction of any State;

The measurement of severity of natural disasters is measured in lives lost and economic loss. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, cyclones, landslides and avalanches, volcanic eruption and earthquakes causes more loss to lives and property, in some cases they can wash away entire communities which affects the populations density.
The concepts that I have mentioned above relate to the rights and concerns of the SIDS, in answering this question I will divide the concepts into three paragraphs. Natural disasters have major effect on small island developing States (SIDS). They have many threats such as climate change, urbanization and environmental degradation.
The SIDS have a very high coastal-concentrated agricultural land and the development of their infrastructure increased the threats from any rise in the sea-level. Secondly climate change can damage coral reefs, it can also damage the fragile island ecosystem and it can also affect fisheries and food crops. The increased frequency and intensity of events by storm can lead to climate change and it will also have effect on the economies and environments of the SIDS.
