Title IX has raised many questions over the years. The questions in perspective are “is this equal among men and women?” Specifically, in recent years, this question has been applied to the various sports among men and women across the United States. Though this law has had many advantages it also has its disadvantages, but where did it all start?
In the 1970’s, the “godmother” of Title IX had filed lawsuits against over 250 schools. This happened in a time when there were no laws against sex discrimination in the education system. Though Title IX has done many good thing in recent years, it has also done many things that do not support what others consider as equality. In the news there have been cases that stand out when it comes to Title IX and their schools. One story that we have heard about is that Quinnipac University in Hamden, Connecticut decided to cut three sports including volleyball, but introduced competitive cheerleading. The volleyball team sued the school based saying that replacing volleyball with competitive cheer is sex discrimination. The ruling in 2010 stated that cheerleading does not qualify as a sport under Title IX. (Toporek) Though the court ruling found that competitive cheer is not supported as a sport, anyone who has ever watched a cheer competition knows that this is not the truth. In competitive cheer, these athletes ,whether male or female, are put through rigorous training that not only involves the floor work, but also the stunts that can be a two man group or can also be a group of twelve or more! To these men and women that put their heart and souls into this sport, for it not to be covered under Title IX is showing that this law still has a ways to go before it is fully developed and covers the wide umbrella of sports that are available to men and women. Another story that has been in the news lately is that of former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston and the rape allegations against him. According to ESPN, Title IX is investigating the allegation and making sure that the female student’s rights are being upheld throughout the case.
