Urban lifestyle, modern diet, and the normal American diet are all synonyms of what we know as the “Western Diet”? The western diet is made up simply consuming overly processed foods that are high in carbohydrates, saturated fats, refined sugars and in taking nearly no vegetables or meat that is high in protein. The “Western Diet” is having a tragic affect on the population by creating obesity in all eras of generation, implementing un-healthy life style choices, and creating a malnourished population. Since the “Western Diet” is seen as such a norm in the American lifestyle, these choices are becoming apart of everyone’s lifestyle. Which in the end could have a calamitous ending? The main idea of the “Western Diet” is a person consumes little to no nutritional value in the meals they consume. Meaning the food is high in saturated fat, sugar, carbs and contains toxic chemicals that will eventually harm the body over a prolonged period of time. These components of the diet can cause obesity, cancer, and other health problems. “In 2014, more than 600 million adults were obese globally, and almost 2 billion adults were overweight, according to the World Health Organization.” (1) The “Western Diet” has become a lifestyle to the younger generation since the older generations have instilled this as the norm. A child is a product of their parent. If a parent is obese and partakes in the “Western Diet”, then a child is also going to participate involuntarily. It is estimated that about one third of Americans today fall within the overweight or obese category. (3) Within the “Western Diet”, empty foods are consumed. Empty foods are foods that have no nutritional value to them. By consuming all of these empty foods, you are malnourished.
