It was a dark, and cold day, when I decided to scour the internet to find the most pseudoscientific, yet popular fad diet I could find. I was rather begrudged that I spent my favorite holiday; Halloween, studying and preparing for upcoming tests and that there wasn’t any good spooky movies on the television. So, to make up for my inability to celebrate Halloween, I looked up the top ten unusual fad diets, and the one I found to be the most ridiculous was The Werewolf Diet. As Stephen King’s number one fan, I was attracted to this diet for obvious reasons. This is a diet that celebrities, and fad diet enthusiasts alike are going crazy over. During this time, is when supporters say that The Werewolf Diet’s benefits are most notably experienced for 24 hours (1). The physiological mechanism that is being used in this diet is two fold: the effects of lunar phases on human physiology, knowing how to adjust feeding during those phases, and by employing cyclical fasting behaviors to promote successful weight loss. Proponents believe that the moon, through its natural cycles propagates the same natural influence on human bodily fluids, as it exerts its influence on bodies of water; such as tidal patterns (1). Therefore, by developing fasting cycles to coincide with lunar phases, the human body will respond respectively in a dynamic way to flush out excessive water and toxins (1). According to Zeratsky (2017), there is insufficient evidence to support that juicing is healthier than eating whole fruit (6). While juicing can provide necessary vitamins and minerals, it doesn’t provide adequate fiber when it is extracted from fruit (6). As far as fasting goes, the available scientific data is inconclusive (6). Kormos (2017) suggests that common diets propagate weight loss by reducing overall caloric intake needed to maintain one’s current body weight (7). Additionally, Kromos (2017) proposes that intermittent fasting may help an individual to lose weight by significant caloric restriction for a few days at a time during a week, when combined with routine caloric consumption on the days that follow after fasting (7). Kronos (2017) also reports that the mechanism behind intermittent fasting slows down an individual's metabolism, because of the decreased appetite associated to fasting (7). While many studies demonstrate short term beneficial effects from fasting, the long term effects are still inconclusive (7). In conclusion, intermittent fasting according to experts helps people lose weight, but contemporary studies are yet to prove that this method of losing weight is superior to other plans, improves immune system function, or prevents various diseases (7). The Werewolf diet could be dangerous for people with diabetes, hyperglycemics, individuals who take diuretics, or those that may be sensitive to fluctuations in
