In the book it states that “political opportunities combined with an individual sense that change is needed and possible” (Brinkerhoff et al. 365). This movement is needed so that the transgender people do not feel attacked for just being themselves. By forcing someone to go into a restroom of the gender that they do not identify with is wrong on behalf of the people who made the law. The law was made to try and control people in the LGBT community and it denies them of basic human rights to go into the restroom that they feel comfortable with. Symbolic interaction theory views social change as something that is needed and possible. The major assumption of this theory is “people join social movements because they have developed an ‘insurgent consciousness’” (Brinkerhoff et al. 365). By removing this law Transgenders would feel more comfortable in choosing where they can go to the restroom. Another goal would be the people who do not know anything about the LGBT community would gain some knowledge on how they feel about the mistreatment they feel. By educating some of the non-LGBT community people can start to have empathy and compassion for the LGBT community. Also we would try to have specified restrooms for the Transgender community. By having specified restrooms this would allow everyone to feel as comfortable as possible so that no one is forced to use a restroom that they do not want to
