Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez was established as president of El Salvador in 1931 after a coup overthrew the governing president, Arturo Araujo. Martinez was then chosen by army officials to preside due to his determined character and military experience; as a result, he ruled from 1931-1944. However, El Salvador’s constitution only allows a 5-year term and a same ruler cannot govern two consecutive periods. In order to extend his presidency, he passed a bill and changed the constitution to enable him to stay in power until December 31, 1944. Additionally, he held presidential elections where he was the only candidate; citizens had no other choice but to elect him as head of state. Hence, his rule is recognized as a dictatorship; the term is defined as absolute, imperious, or overbearing power or control exercised by a dictator. He led a humble lifestyle where would only need $58 USD in order to maintain his household, since he understood the gravity of the country’s economic depression. Salvadorian political leaders should find his example inspiring and try to use the resources according to the country’s needs and maximize the positive effects this could bring. On November 4,2016 El Salvador’s district attorney exhibited proof that former president Antonio Saca from 2004-2009 along with six members of his cabinet, used his presidency to transfer $270 million USD to foreign bank accounts in Dubai and Dominican Republic [See Exhibit 4]. It was evident that their personal holdings grew after their period in power but to know for a fact the mass amount of money they stole from the country can be incomprehensible; this shows that political leaders seek to benefit themselves and accept corruption as part of their
