Policing in the U.S. has seen some change yet it is still quite similar to modern day policing. According to Auandaru Nirhani’s view on policing in his essay “Policing slaves since the 1600’s,” there are few similarities; as well as some differences over the past years. Nirhani also talks about Slave patrols, which consisted of white men who conducted armed patrols during the night. The patrollers had to break up slave gatherings and search slave residences. Nirhani also talks about the level of discrimination from the past compared to the present.…
The political era of policing was between 1837 and 1910. Some of the main characteristic of the political era was that officers were hired and fired by the politicians within their areas. The officers’ were very loyal to the politicians that hired them. During election years, police officers would encourage the citizens to vote for the politician they supported so they could stay in office and the officer could keep their job. Hiring standards during the political era were nonexistent.…
This standoff was the quintessential example of society’s conflicts as the previous Victorian values of our society were replaced with modern values. The police institutions of America expanded in response to the demands of the rapidly modernizing society of the Progressive Era. The police expanded to maintain order in a society…
What Are the Issues in Policing? Policing has been around for a very long time in society. Policing is simply the duties and tasks that police officers have to perform to maintain law and order in communities. Polices perform such duties as traffic control, criminal investigation, keeping peace, and other helpful services to citizens. Over time, policing has changed tremendously and has had a great effect on today’s society.…
There has been talk about the black community creating their own policing today. This form of policing would protect the black youth and have the black youth best interest at hand. The government has successfully stopped the Black Panther Movement but The KKK calls their duties community policing and the United States government is completely fine with it. The KKK and their tactics are the complete opposite of policing. They cause more damage than good but they are policing for their people and their communities.…
In the Frontline documentary Policing the Police, writer and historian Jelani Cobb investigates the problems facing the Newark Police department. The film specifically follows the gang unit whose main focus is getting guns off the street. In the background Cobb explains what he is witnessing and what he’s learning from it. Cobb explains how the police can only stop people with legal justification, but 75% of the time there was no legal justification. There is no trust between the members of society and the police and vice versa.…
Policing in Canada has progressed since the Code of Hammurabi in 1200 BC. The first police force was founded, and organized by Sir Robert Peel, where he came up with nine principles that police officers should follow (Griffiths, 2015). One of these principles were that “police [should] maintain public favour by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service, not by catering to public opinion” (Griffiths, 2015, p. 29). As a result, police officers should not be affected by the opinions of the power groups or the government. However, this is not the case.…
Provide brief explanations of the major advantages and disadvantages of each of the three policing eras identified. In this module, we have discussed a few eras of policing: The political era, reform era, and the community era. Trends in policing and functionality are directly related to society’s view on the police. My grandfather who was once a Massachusetts State Trooper, will talk about how well respected the force was up until he retired in 1990. He would say how almost no one would dare to talk back during a traffic stop, or how people genuinely appreciated him for holding the position that he did. I think it’s safe to say that the view on law enforcement is now a polar opposite than what is was thirty years ago. Due to the new view on police, community policing is making a huge comeback in order to mend relations between agencies and its’…
When you think about policing you think about authority. Being a leader is crucial in a community that needs help. A police officer is like a guardian angel. They protect you from all the evil activities and vicious criminals that’s out to harm people. It’s there sole duty to protect its citizens.…

After searching many websites, I attempted to identify a couple of topics I can relate too. Several years ago I served as a police officer, so I know firsthand how sleep deprivation affects work performance. Long shifts with minimal time off, reduces an officer’s ability to function at high capacity. Levels of alertness and attention to details decrease. Problems at work and in the home begins to develop.…
In an article titled “The Police Were Created to Control Working Class and Poor People, Not ‘Serve and protect’’ by Sam Mitrani the editor states that police officers were never made to serve and protect the population. They were not made to stop crime or promote justice. Instead, Ms. Mitrani states that around the nineteenth century “police officers” were made to protect the new age of wage-labor from the so called threat of the working class. Then she continues on to give evidence of such cases but in the same sense “police officers” had a choice on where or not they wanted to hold such a title. The evolution and meaning of a police officer has changed since the 19th century.…
It was not unheard of that officers themselves took part in these minor crimes, so accepting bribes to not enforce them was a common occurrence. Corruption in the criminal justice system still persists to…
-The Political era ran from the 1840’s to the 1930’s. It was needed due to the demand for social order. It also closed all ties the police force had with any political officials, who also at that time, hired the police(Schmalleger, 2016, p.112) -The Refrom era was during the years of 1930 and 1970. This was the time when law enforecentment decided to focus on “Traditional Crimes”(Drug Possession, Burglary, and Theft/Larceny).…
