The Olympics Should Be Banned

The Olympic Games are a worldwide competition where athletes from all over the world fight for the gold in a variety of sports. Before the Games begin, the opening ceremony brings all of the spectators, athletes, and officials together in one place. This ceremony is a chance for all athletes from different countries to come together and represent their homes. Regardless of their differences, the athletes are all the same when it comes to playing their sport. Even though the Olympics are planned very carefully in a safe environment, controversies and problems are bound to happen. To reinforce this statement John Hoberman writes, “The Olympic Games were founded to bridge cultural divides and promote peace. Instead, they often mask human rights abuses, do little to spur political change, and lend legitimacy to unsavory governments.” Types of controversies and problems which can occur are the politics between countries, countries going into debt because of how expensive the Olympics are, the health of the athletes, crime, drug scandals, and unfair officials. The Olympics could also have an impact on the locals living in that city because they may be “in the way” of the Games. Multiple stray animals in Brazil at the 2016 Summer Olympics were taken off the streets because many people complained about them and were thought of as a burden to everyone in Rio.
