Although he grew up on the country side he fought in WWI. He was of the Captain of artillery and helped fight the war. After the war he returned home and opened a business with his new wife that he married in France. His ranks among the Democratic Party increased when he became a judge for Jackson. His ranking continued to move up as he became a senator. As a senator during the start of WWII he saved America around 15 billion dollars after checking a corruption. In 1944 President Franklin D. Roosevelt needed a new vice president after being elected. Alonzo also stated that “He also had a good voting record as a senator, and Roosevelt was willing to accept him.” (Alonzo Hamby, p. 468) He choose Truman as his vice president due to his popularity and his public standing as well.
