There has been 1,449 prisoners executed since 1976 till 2017 (Death Penalty Information Center, 2017). In 1999 the United States hit its highest number of execution with a total of 98 prisoners executed (Death Penalty Information Center, 2017). From 1999 till 2017 there has been a slow but steady decrease in the number of prisoners executed per year. Why has there been a steady decrease in people being executed? Has there been less criminals committing serious crimes? Are states getting rid of the death penalty? Are more states sentencing inmates to life sentence instead of death row? Or did the previous prisoners that died on death row deter future criminals from committing such harsh crimes that could land them on death row? The death penalty I argue is very essential in are criminal justice system. Prisoners who committed premediated murder I argue deserve to get executed. For example, Dylann Storm Roof. Mr. Roof went to an African American church and killed nine people (O'Shea& Sanchez, 2016). Mr. Roof laughed while committing to the murders he committed (O'Shea& Sanchez, 2016). Mr. Roof killed multiple people and showed no remorse about his actions. A person who would do something is this nature is a threat to our society even if he is in jail. Mr. Roof acted in such ruthless manner because he was racist. Mr. Roof preach to other people in prisons his beliefs about black people which might cause them to act in a ruthless manner. This could lead to multiple inmates getting killed inside of the prison or when an inmate gets released they could go commit another mass shooting. It’s important that a man such as Mr. Roof is executed. The death penalty can executed prisoners who cause serious danger threat to society and severely punish them for the harsh crimes they have

A white male enters the church around 8 p.m. and joins a group bible study, waiting nearly an hour before standing up and firing at everyone. Nine church goers were killed, one of those nine being a church pastor and South Carolina senator, Clementa Pinckney (Shapiro, ABC News). Through the help of security cameras posted in front of the church, Dylann Roof, 21, was identified as the shooter. While many debate the use of the death penalty, it would seem appropriate in this situation. However, it may be revealed that Roof was, in fact, suffering from mental illness. If Roof were suffering from mental illness, then perhaps life without parole would be more appropriate. As the debate over Roof being charged with a hate crime continues, it should be noted that prosecutors must and should charge Roof with the best charges that will lead to a likelihood of conviction, not what the public wants. After all, Roof will have a defense attorney in this matter, and the defense attorney would likely challenge a terrorism charge.…

The Death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment. It is a platform that is anti-poor and discrimination. With the death penalty there is still innocent people getting wrongly executed. In 1976 the United States released 138 innocent men and women have been released from death row, including one that came within minutes of execution, since the reinstatement of the death penalty. In 1992, Cameron Todd Willingham was convicted of arson murder in Texas.…

The death penalty should be abolished in the United States because of its inhumaneness and lack of moral values. Many people in the United States are facing the punishment of death row. The death penalty is used to kill a person who has been convicted of inhumane crimes. Those who are for the death penalty think it is “ preventing serious harm to innocent people and a weighty reason for using a particular penalty (as in doing justice)”(Davis…

As John Morrison exclaimed,“It should be clear that the death penalty does just the opposite of promoting decency and respect for life... It can never be applied fairly.” Since the mid nineteenth century, inmates on death row have been murdered by a plethora of gruesome methods, such as venomous lethal injections, gas chambers, and electrocution. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, there have been 1,413 executions in the United States from 1976 to the present. Although the number of death penalty verdicts are decreasing, flaws in the American judicial system have caused an increase in the amount of punishing wrongfully accused suspects to the death penalty.…

The death penalty is applied at random of the 15,000 to 17,000 homicides committed each year in the United States of America , approximately 120 people are sentenced to death penalty, less than 1%. Applying the death penalty would not mean every criminal will sentenced to death. The court of justice still has to prove if they are guilty or not, therefore even the death penalty applied only few will face the death penalty punishment. Instead of thinking of punishment to deter crime, we should think of why people committing crime at first place. We should think of solutions, how we can have a free- crime country.…

As a large number of the population could agree with me, death is one of a person’s greatest fears. Establishing the death penalty allows for a sense of fear, if he knows that death is a possible consequence for his actions, he is less likely to commit a crime. There is a significant problem in the American prison system with overpopulation. Inmates who are already serving life sentences are simply sitting behind bars waiting to die for decades. By carrying out the death penalty it allows room to be made for the growing inmate population; especially, those who have committed lesser offenses and are expected to be released (Death Penalty). Relatedly, there are people concerned that the death penalty can be used against those who are convicted of lesser crimes. This is not plausible as unless a capital crime is committed the death penalty cannot be presented as a…

Jay Johanson states that during 1965 and 1980, which was a period in which the death penalty had a few occurrences due to it being banned in the 1970s, the numbers in homicides increased dramatically. Once the Death penalty resumed in 1995 with aggression, the annual number of homicides had decreased. He states that if the death penalty is applied consistently then the homicide rate in america will ultimately decrease (1). Those who are in favor of the Death Penalty have many reasons why they support it. One of these reasons is that those who are murderers are placed in prison for life instead of being executed, could potentially harm or kill other inmates or possibly Correctional Officers.…

An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind or does it. The death penalty is what prisoners get when they do something horrible. The death penalty has been in debate for a very long time. The death penalty should be allowed because this can keep killer and other people who did the samething out the streets. Another reason is that it will cost less money for states to keep housing them instead of putting them on death row, also this will bring closure to families by showing them that the one who killed their family member is gone and won’t them any more but they can always think about it.…
