The Pros And Cons Of The Border Wall

Donald Trump said, “I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.” (Trump, 2015) Well to a large group of people this idea seems simply impractical to many people in this day and age, especially due to the size Trump claims that his wall will be. Trump states that the wall will be somewhere between 30 and 50 feet high, and this number will be set by the size of the precast planks being used to build this wall. (Bump par.5) These people believe that a border wall is unnecessary, too expensive, and a danger to the environment. Some even claim that to build such a wall would be racist. Donald Trump, however, disregards these beliefs. He states that the wall would be a mere fraction of the current trade deficit with Mexico and that it would help keep thousands of illegal immigrants out of the United States. Trump states that Mexico is going to pay for it causing major controversy and political divides. Due to this controversy that is very unlikely to happen, but there is a possibility we could get them to cover part of the cost or let them build parts for us, as sort of a compromise. Or, if the wall is only the 8-12 billion he said it would be, then funding can come from temporary tax increases or cutting of other funding. This would be a fantastic investment of taxpayer money as well, since it would create more jobs and infrastructure in the southern states as well as reduce the quantity of drugs beings smuggled into America. Eight billion dollars isn’t a ridiculous number for a government project, recently the government created a new headquarters for the Department of Homeland Security which cost 4.5 billion dollars and it was practically unheard of.
