The Pros And Cons Of The American Revolution

Decent Essays
Above all else, this fight for independence will bring unnecessary bloodshed to our soil. The might of the British armada far surpasses the strength of our colonies. Some even say they are the strongest in the world (Foner, 193); the very idea that we Americans could prevail in war against them is laughable. If by some miracle we were to succeed and win our independence, what price would we pay? Five Bostonian men have already fallen at the hands of British soldiers (Foner, 179-180). If we were to go to war, how high would that number rise? Let us not tear apart the families of our colonies with these selfish notions of independence.
Although she is far across the ocean, Britain remains our mother country. Our homeland. We may be so-called

When the Patriots revolted against our mother country’s rule, they were in the wrong. Great Britain had supported our small, disorganized colonies through all our hardships and was our dear mother country. Our past lives and roots are in British soil, and to disobey the place of our roots is to completely disregard everything the British did for us, like protect us during the French and Indian War. Great Britain has protected us from hardships in our new land and has supported our endeavors since the beginning. We should not be rebelling against the country that has supplied us, and continues to supply us, with the things we’ve needed to expand the empire; we should not violently break away from our mother country, but instead protest these…

Up until the 1770’s few Americans were thinking about independence from Britain, and the struggle was framed in the terms of colonial protests seeking redress for grievances( Hugh Dussek). Increasing tension eventually led to the declaration of independence and in turn resulted in the revolutionary war. All of the tension resulted in an overwhelming amount of motivation for the American colonists, they had a reason, an incentive to fight, whereas the British soldiers had little if any motivation aside from being ordered to fight. Before the war began, parliament had multiple discussions about whether or not the colonists had the same rights as British citizens, the majority believed that they had and thus deserved the same liberties as well…

The indisputably superior naval strength and differences in manpower are the next problems brought up before the author. The loyalist argument against immediate independence is as follows: as of 1775 England possesses the strongest and biggest naval power in the world. With great naval dominance, then, England is able to form various colonies across the globe. The obvious difference in the number of able men ready to fight in battle provides a logical reason to decline an immediate independence. To this statement, Paine retorts, that it is now that they must react, as America has the strength to fight back.…

The American Revolution was primarily a conservative revolution, because the rebels weren’t trying to create something that was new, unheard of, or radically different. The rebels were simply trying to restore things back to the way they had been before the Seven Years War. Even some British understood the logic behind the revolution and were not keen on putting forth money, time and effort in order to stop it. The British had been radically changing their policies towards Americans after the Seven Years War, so the Americans were conservative in attempting to restore their ideas of representation and government. But, the rebels were also radical in the sense that they were overthrowing the government and declaring themselves an independent…

British assets were depleting at an exponential rate, so Parliament decided to tax the colonists in order to offset their expenses from the war. By reducing the debt from the seven-year war King George’s could reign over the colonies for many years to come. Consequently, Colonists in the 13 states suffered higher expenditures, even imported tea would cost more than usual. All 13 colonies gave consent on paying higher taxes to the British crown, however Boston didn’t consent because they weren’t provided representation so their response was no, but parliament subjected them anyways.…
