On March 23, 2010, United States president Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, more easily recognized as the ACA, or Obamacare. The act was theoretically put into effect in efforts to allow citizens to have a greater input in the health insurance process, according to the introduction of the first section of the act (U.S. Government Printing Office, 1). It also boldly declares that should one have the ability to afford health insurance, and simply not act upon it, he or she will be fined a flat rate fee, or a tax on their annual household revenue. The second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence discusses three important undeniable rights to all men. Of which these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To add healthcare into this is illogical. All citizens should be able to decide whether or not they want to buy into healthcare. Like any trade, regulation is decided upon each individual consumer, not the distributor of the product. The Affordable Care Act is also unnecessary because it proposes that each citizen must have health insurance, which is not logical. The act of having health insurance is not necessary for a nation of healthy citizens to prosper. The opposition may be led to believe that The Affordable Care Act is necessary because it lowers the numbers of infected persons and lowers the amount of hospital mistakes that have occurred (Affordable Care Act Isn’t Perfect, 2). What is not realized when one is caught in this mindset is that preventing infections and treating them are two different things. Treating a disease or infection can be executed with health insurance through the process of obtaining antibiotics or other medications alike, but taking steps to prevent oneself from becoming infected can be done without insurance very easily. Eating responsibly, keeping a clean household environment, and even flu shots can all be achieved without insurance for a very low price.
