What is public policy? Public policy is the means by which a government maintains order or addresses the needs of its citizens through actions defined by its constitution. It is what government chooses to do or not to do. According to Dye (2017), they regulate conflict within society, they organize society to carry on conflict with other societies, they distribute a great variety of symbolic rewards and material services to members of most often in the form of taxes. Thus, public polies may regulate behavior, organize bureaucracies, and distribute benefits, or extract taxes- or all of these things at once. (p.2)
Public policy is broken down into categories. One category that I will elaborate on is the Health Policy. The Health policy, for example, covers not only the insurance mandates discussed above, but refers to all policies related to the health of a particular group. When the act was implemented was a lot of mixed emotions that followed. The Affordable Healthcare Act helped some individuals and harmed others. Pros of the Healthcare Act Some of the advantages of having the Affordable Healthcare Act are understandable. With this policy in place insurance companies can not deny anyone coverage with preexisting conditions. This means for example, people who have AIDS or a diabetic will not be dropped if they get sick because they have a preexisting condition. Some of the cons were understandable. If you had a smaller business you save money with insuring your employees. On the other hand, if you had a large organization it was better for you to pay the penalty and have employees to purchase insurance plans on the exchanges.
