What is teratogens? Not many people know. Teratogens are environmental agents or factors that can cause developmental issues or birth defects to the embryo. Some of these agents are illegal drugs, prescription drugs, viruses, or chemicals. When you are pregnant the job of the placenta is to keep teratogens out of the fetus, although there are some that make it to the fetus. They say you should not smoke while you are pregnant. While being pregnant and smoking it can cause low birth weight, born prematurely, or even death before birth. There are 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes. Two compounds are especially harmful: nicotine and carbon monoxide. These two main toxins account for almost every smoking-related complication during a pregnancy. I know that articles say that smoking and the nicotine in cigarettes are very bad for your health and even more so for your fetus. The nicotine when inhaled reduces the baby’s supply of oxygen. Nicotine chokes off oxygen by narrowing blood vessels throughout your body, including the ones in the umbilical cord. This affects the baby threw out the whole time you are pregnant. Stunting a baby’s growth while in the womb is very wrong to do, doctors say that every pack of cigarettes a day that you smoke, take off anywhere from a half a pound to a pound depending on how much you consume in on 24 hour period. Undersized babies are very under developed bodies. Such as their lungs.
