Surging rideshare companies such as, Lyft and Uber, offer struggling Americans jobs that were vacant in past times. However, such companies have been the bedrock of outrage from current professional chauffeurs. In my city of San Antonio, the City Council had approved a series of guidelines that regulate ridesharing companies. At the time, local taxi drivers had become gleeful, as the stern guidelines were being approved. Furthermore, the taxi drivers felt that the competition between the Taxi industry and rideshare companies had become leveled due to the Council’s proposals. My uncle can attest to what taxi chauffeurs are disputing on the matter of ridesharing services. He lives in a liveable small house in our city’s West Side. Our city’s West Side tends to inhabit Middle-Class families along with families that produce profoundly low wages. My uncle has worked as a local taxi driver for over 20 years. With his job, he scarcely produces enough profit to pay for his house, vehicle inspections, and food. His kids, who are now adults, are having to constantly assist him with his phone, electricity, and water payments. The constant fear he senses is that he will lose his job with the competitive rideshare companies present. Furthermore, he fears losing his job will force him to depart from his house, and move in with his kids. My friend’s dad is also a longtime taxi driver, however, he too anguishes over whether the trending rideshare companies will take over his current job. He clarifies how if he were to lose his job due to the high competition of rideshare services, then he would have to move his family to a lower-cost neighborhood. Moreover, his wife would have to endure a third job, concurrent with her other two, in order to help in supporting the family economically. The anguishing horror surrounding taxi drivers can be heard presumably nationwide, however, rideshare drivers dispute that ridesharing companies offer a new job option for Americans trying to make ends meet. Instead of battling the rideshare industry, maybe the taxi industry should be modified to evolve alongside the new car riding
