The Pros And Cons Of Summer Reading

Improved Essays
Each year, students are required to read books during the summer, as a means to keep you reading even while school is not in session. The idea of summer reading is a good one, however the execution of this idea is not as good. The way summer reading is set up at Renbrook has its pros and cons. One pro being the book, or two, that the entire grade reads. It’s a good idea to have the whole grade read at least one book in common to spark conversation, especially on the first English class of the school year. However, for the other three books that the students have to read, they should be a personal choice. Nothing is more uninteresting than a book that you do not connect with, so by giving the freedom to choose your own book to read, not off of a list, you can have your own amazing experience with a book that interests you. That being said, I did find a …show more content…
This book really connected with me on a few different levels. I had a lot of sympathy for Christopher and his family, because family issues are always the hardest to deal with and I have had my fair share. I was very excited that this book was chosen for the whole grade to read, mostly because the main character has a mental disorder similar to autism. My little brother has a form of autism, and so it was nice to see a story from the point of view of someone with a similar disorder. This book showed that young people with a mental disorder can still go through life, they just do it differently than the rest of us. Most people with mental illnesses are portrayed as insane in many books, television shows, and movies, but in this book he was portrayed exactly like he should have been. I also liked this book because it helped me connect with my brother more, because I can see the world through his eyes now. Reading this book was a breeze for me because I really connected to it, but there was one book I did not connect

She wrote this book so beautifully it opened my eyes, I constantly complain about my parents and how they are so noisy about knowing what is going on in my life. It is better to have noisy parents then irresponsible ones. She used such powerful words that made you want to continue reading. The strengths of this book are that is it an easy read, it makes you grateful and also it opens your eyes and makes you realize that not everyone’s family life is just like yours, some people are raised differently than you are. Even though I really enjoyed this book I did find a few weaknesses, one being that at times it was difficult to read and not because of the wording but because of the content.…

This is my review on the book Shattered Lives; This book was written by Camila Batmanghelidjh the founder of Kids Company; the registered charity was founded in 1996 with the aim to provide support to deprived inner city children. The author was born into wealthy family in Iran and arrived in England aged twelve where she attended private school. The book is sectioned into ten chapters, with an introduction and appendix at the end explaining who is who in the therapy world, and a guide to substance misuse. The book consists of several letters written to victims of abuse, which seem to be in the form of apologies to children who have been let down by the system.…

Plot: The exposition of this book is rather unique, because instead of taking place solely in one spot, it was scattered throughout the book. The beginning introduces the main conflict –who owns the key –but not who the characters are as people. It takes a majority of the book for the reader to understand the characters. Foer decided to write the book like this to make it more like reality. It takes a long time to really get to know another person, and by withholding information about the characters he displays this.…

Jesus said to the people around him, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” In the nonfictional story, Heaven is for Real, Todd Burpo tells the story of his son, Colton, who claimed to have seen the face of Jesus in the Kingdom of Heaven while being operated on and showing no signs of being dead or not present. This was a truly extraordinary book and I would strongly encourage anyone, of all faiths and religions, to read it. The book really stood out for me.…

While reading chapter one of In the Middle, I was relieved that the text was presented like a novel. It had a story line that made you feel like you were reading a book by choice and not for reasons other than your own entertainment. Glenda Bissexs’ teaching story was very informative as she struggles with her teaching strategies and comes to terms with herself that her strategies need to be revised as a teacher in order to help frame her students for future success. I find it hard to come to terms with myself that students should be able to choose the books they read every day in class. I wonder how one could grade on situations such as these.…

I think the book, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid Double down”, written by Jeff Kinney, was an awesome book. The book is about a young kid, like me, who is just learning his common sense and his moral ethics. The book was very entertaining to read as it gives the perspective of a young boy, Greg Heffley, of his not-so-ordinary life. People may think he’s ordinary, but when you get into his everyday life, it gets weird. He has an older brother, which I can relate to, and he’s always trying to get out of work, no matter what.…

As many kids were taught at an early age how to read and write I was too in Kindergarten by my older sister. Kids my age after school usually finished any homework assigned; then played with friends or watch television. On the other hand, I was taught in my old house which was pretty small and my sister, whom taught me it; she was in third grade She would love to play to “school” with me, it went a little like “I’ll be the teacher and you can be the student”. I would come home from a long day at school all tired, wanting to sleep and just wanting to stuff my face because of hunger. On the other hand, my sister was never tired, she had the energy to run a mile after school, which is why she always forced to me to learn the minute she came home.…

Story of a Book Reading and writing are key elements of literature. Reading and writing were never a hobby for me. These two elements are fundamental principles for everyone’s education, so there goes me learning how to read and write. Only times I get interested in reading and writing is when I read and write something interesting, like something with a meaning that makes you think, or something with a cause. I love learning how to speak new languages, which interests me to end up reading and writing them.…
