The Pros And Cons Of Storm Water

Decent Essays
Is it ok to let oil run down into the storm drain or gutter? No, it is not ok because when it goes down into the drain or gutter it will kill fish and other wildlife. People always change the oil in their cars. Some people think it is ok to let it run down instead of putting it in a can and disposing of it properly. Others don’t realize their car is dripping oil. Once the oil rushes into the nearby gutters and storm drains, it goes straight into streams, lakes, rivers and bays. The storm water enters these waters without being cleaned of pollutants. All across the Untied States the storm water has caused serious damage to lakes, rivers, streams and land that use the water. The Washington Department of Ecology states that one-third of all

The oils natural state is known as bitumen, which is mad up of sand, clay and a small density of water. Any strategy to obtaining the bitumen creates a toxic environment run-off. Environmentalists also fear that a leak from the projects pipeline could cause more environmental damage than a leak from any other standard pipeline. There are also concerns of pollutants being exposed to the water sources in the areas that the pipeline will travel through. This brings a great concern to human and wildlife drinking water…

FACTORS The BP oil spill directly affected the health of the environment in very harmful ways. In an account of the environmental losses regarding the BP oil spill, a famous writer for the Washington Post, Kevin Nance (2015), illustrates a reflection of the consequences in the wake of this disaster: “We remember the giant oil slick burning on the water, blackening the beaches, clogging the marshlands, choking and killing the fish and wildlife.” Many forms of wildlife suffered throughout this highly preventable incident, ruining fragile ecosystems permanently, despite the endless efforts of engineers and environmental specialists. Even 5 years after this spill, the consequences are still prevalent and largely noticeable.…

    Dangers Of Fracking

Once the water is used in the fracking process it becomes hazardous waste unfit for human or animal consumption due to the toxic chemicals mix with the water, for example Hydrochloric acid, Ammonium chloride , Potassium chloride as well as many more chemicals. The waste water is removed from the wells and sent to storage areas where it will eventually be pumped back in to the ground deep below the water tables. Some companies are starting to recycle the waste water by filtering and adding fresh water to dilute the chemical…

The Chattahoochee River, Georgia’s most heavily-used water source, is home to a variety of fish and a supplier of over 70% of the drinking water in metro Atlanta; it was also ranked number three on America’s ‘most endangered’ list. Each day, more than 250 million gallons of sewage waste water is dumped in to river, so news that the river is constantly contaminated with E. coli is no surprise. Even with the vast amount of contamination, Georgia allows the dumping of waste to continue; they give out permits to dump in the waters. Without proper laws and regulations, the continued dumping of waste on the Chattahoochee River will eventually cause it to become too contaminated for human use and wildlife survival. The Chattahoochee River begins in the northeast of Georgia and continues down 524 miles to Apalachicola Bay, Florida.…

Louisiana has faced many environmental problems throughout its history. Problems such as shoreline loss, wetlands being destroyed, and oceanic life dying. These problems are because of Hurricane Katrina, human population density, and the oil spill. The hurricane wiped out the region’s shoreline and the oil spill killed many of the oceanic life in the Gulf of Mexico. According to Marquina (2015), a storm like Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster waiting to happen for the state of Louisiana.…

Many of the negative side effects of fracking effect the environment and the health and wellbeing of not only wildlife, but also the human population. As of 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated that 35,00 wells in the United States require 70 to 140 billion gallons of water to fracture. This compares to the water consumption of 40 to 80 cities. The direct impact of this water usage is depletion of fresh water supplies, and damage to local infrastructure as all of the water must be transported by trucks. The water must also be disposed of after use.…

Therefore, when the gushers came in or oil leaked onto the ground it soaked into the soil or created ponds of oil. This alone created an environmental hazard, completely saturating the earth with pollution. Hardin County, previously known for it’s lumber industry and rice farmers could easily have polluted entire fields of crops. Additionally, these pits of oil frequently ignited which created an increased chance of fires in the oil fields and also in the town that resided close by. These fires contributed to the environmental pollution that continued over the course of early oil production in the area.…

With the intent of moving 500,000 gallons per day of crude oil, if the pipe line were to rupture or leak in some way these oils do not evaporate quickly. The cleanup required for crude oil which is considered to be a medium oil is only most successful when done immediately after the spill. The oil can still reside in high and low water areas and can be extremely threatening to mammals since it can cling to feathers, fur or hair (D, 2012). Many of the environmentalists and protestors who support the Sioux tribe believe that it is only a matter of time before the pipeline leaks because it is not a question of if but when. Special interest groups, in this case activists for the environment that want the prevention of global warming traditionally would lobby governments to have stricter standards and mandates for electricity companies but have been often overturned (Dolsak, Prakash, and Allen, 2016.).…

In my hometown of Canastota, NY there are a few different environmental impacts that affect the community, some good and some bad. One major environmental pro for Canastota is the fact that it is what they call a “muck land.” Canastota is known for its production of onions and potatoes, in fact, its home to one of the top production companies in NYS. Not only was this a major source of food for our community at one point in time, but it was a major source of income as well. With access to things like the Erie Canal, the railroad, and later the NYS thruway Canastota was able to survive.…
