Standardized tests are given to public school students yearly and are “used to determine how and when students advance, from 1st grade through graduate school” (Meier 2007, p. 203). Tests compare students. Students are compared because their results allow them to be placed in a group. Tests are given to students to test various objectives, where they receive points for correct answers. From all the correct answers a student gets, a raw score that is calculated (Waldon 2016, slide 11). Meier states, “tests are called ‘standardized’ when the same test is given under similar conditions to large groups of students” (Meier 2007, p. 203).Tests are formal assessments that are efficient. Standardized tests “do not lead to lasting increases in student achievement” (Karp 2007, p.200). Students are tested on so much material in just a couple of days. Students become stressed and cannot perform as well as they are capable of scoring. For instance, a student may be having a bad day or be sick, and therefore not score as well as they normally would. The score on that particular test, may determine if the student will be promoted to the next grade, or not, and if they did not score well enough the student may have to be retained even if they are capable of being promoted.
One pro of testing is they are given “to large groups of students, whether districtwide, statewide, or nationwide,” which allows students to see how they perform against students in their grade (Meier 2007, p.203). These tests give teachers, a sense of their student’s levels. Standardized tests are a good way to track students’ improvement from year to year. In addition, standardized tests cover all the material students’ need to learn. In addition, the SAT and ACT are test the help students get scholarships for college and show colleges if you are ready for college
