In Sports Illustrated’s article Underworked and Overpaid, Joe Sheehan argues that players are sometimes even overpaid because the lack of production from particular players. One example that Sheehan gave was former Detroit Tiger pitcher Max Scherzer. Sheehan showed that even in 169 career starts as a pitcher, Scherzer has never completed a full game, but is still most likely sign a huge nine-figure contract in the off season. This is the perception of the modern athlete—that they don’t work hard and get paid a lot to do it. And Roy Hobbs is the clear opposite, in which he gets overworked and underpaid.…

One reason i feel they are not overpaid is they had earned to be there they had earned to be playing on that field. Also the better you are the more the teams are going to want to pay for you to be on their team. I also know that athletes had injuries that can cost up to $70,000. Like Paul George when he snapped his leg is basketball that costed approximately $65,000 dollars for surgery. One example is Tom Brady he is a 5 time super bowl champ quarterback.…

I am personally a collegiate athlete and knows what an athlete goes through. Players shouldn’t get paid millions of dollars like professional athletes, because why would players go on to try and play professionally. On the contrary they should deserve some type of revenue whether it's for clothes shopping, take someone out on a date, gas money, etc. For example that’s the same thing as me asking my friend to do something for me and he does all the work while I sit back and relax.…

To help achieve a better understanding of how comparable professional athletes are in their respective sports, looking at the top 100 earners in each sport will help. The MLB dominates other sports in average salary for the top 100 earners with 16.4 million dollars. Although the MLB has the highest average salary for the top 100 earners in the sport, they are being undervalued. “On average, teams are undervaluing players by 357,836.64” (Pearce). Since athletes in baseball seem to make the most on average, franchises can get away with not paying an athlete what they are actually worth.…

The average salary of a professional NBA player is about 5.15 million dollars. When one takes this massive amount of dough and compares it to the average salary of a middle class citizen, which ranges from 42,000 dollars to 125,000 dollars, one would notice that the NBA player makes substantially more than the average citizen. Professional athletes should have smaller salaries because jobs that save lives get payed way less, ---, and the money they are getting could be used to help the community. When looking at the paychecks of athletes and the paychecks of people in the military or people who are doctors, you would realize, the athlete gets more money. This is completely and utterly absurd.…

Plenty of people argue that it is unfair student athletes do not receive a salary with all of the hard work and dedication they put into the sports that they play for universities. However, these same people do not understand the reason these student athletes do not get paid to begin with. Allen Sanderson and John Siegfried explain that if college athletes received pay, there would be “general labor laws” that would not allow these athletes to practice and work as hard as they do today. These labor laws would also restrict them from receiving “workers’ compensation” if injured since they would still be “considered students rather than employees” (Sanderson and Siegfried). Therefore, college athletes would have to follow certain labor laws that…
