Everyone who is apart of the Spirit Squad is eligible to receive tuition and fee waivers. The academic requirements for cheerleading at SIU are cheerleaders must maintain a 2.2 GPA and must attend all classes unless there is a Southern Illinois University Carbondale sanctioned event (“Southern Illinois University”). The SIU Carbondale Cheerleading and Mascot Policy of 2015-2016 says, “Southern Illinois University Carbondale Cheerleaders are ultimately students first and athletes second. The Special Olympics shows students and the community people with disabilities aren’t as different from them as they thought. The Special Olympics wants to provide year-round sport activities for children and adults with disabilities (“Southern Illinois University”).
Up ‘til Dawn is a student-led organization and is a nation-wide organization. The goal of Up ‘til Dawn is to end childhood cancer for good. The students involved in the organization help raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital through many different fundraisers and activities (“Southern Illinois University”).
Active Minds at Southern Illinois University’s goal is to increase the awareness of mental illnesses on campus at SIU. The organization also aims to end negative connotation that comes along with having a mental illness (“Southern Illinois University”).
