The Pros And Cons Of STEM Vs Steam

Improved Essays
In the topic of STEM vs. STEAM, I would have to side with STEAM. I believe in STEAM over STEM for many reasons. STEM may include a subtle amount of the arts, but not enough, I believe that more is needed. With STEAM there is a higher priority to include art in the curriculum, and I believe it can result in a higher education. Art is relaxing, creative, expressive, and should be something every student gets to experience in depth.
I believe taking the STEM approach is a good way to bore students. Yes, some of the lessons involve art like, language arts, social studies, and history but that isn’t enough (Jolly, 2014). I know when I was in High School I would enjoy the classes that included art or had a creative approach to teaching the material. Drilling the same material, reading through a book, and answering test questions day after day is dull. I don’t believe that focusing more on the core subjects like science and math will result in better test scores, better grades, more educated students, and more successful graduates. Everyone is different and should be accounted for. Some people are visual learners,

STEAM debate. I think STEAM offers more creativity, along with a mental release from the intensive regime STEM offers. While STEM does offer a subtle amount of the arts in its curriculum, STEAM focuses more on these particular art courses as well as being able to offer science, math, and engineering as well. With STEAM students will not become burned out on drilling the same subject day after day. They’ll be able to learn STEM while having fun and enjoying themselves in the process. I believe a learning environment focusing strictly on learning is too hardcore and students become bored. With STEAM you get the best of both worlds, being able to learn science, math, technology, engineering, and have necessary courses such as language arts, digital design, photography, drama, and many

I agree to Willingham’s argument and think that it will complement the reading comprehension strategies. I can relate my science students to baseball example given in the video, where some of my top scorer on science assignments are not the one who passing English classes with good grades. I assign science reading to my students almost every class and they would often complaint, it is too difficult to comprehend. I feel in science class, failure might not be the sufficient reading ability to understand more familiar genres of text, but rather, the student may only falter when faced with challenging, knowledge demanding text.…

The aspect of students and teachers having to follow a certain method of educating or being educated is true in most instances. However; a free-thinking environment, in most of my personal cases, still pertains to be a factor in the classroom. Being “bored” with the education in a classroom is no different than being bored with a television program, you simply find something that peaks your interest and study that material. While most credited education is in a direct format; there truthfully is no limit to the amount of knowledge one can learn, one must have the stride to want…

Students always have that one subject, the one subject they hate, it 's on their mind as soon as they walk into the doors of school, and on their minds when they leave, infact its probably on their mind the whole time at school. The anxiety and stress it causes would affect the students marks in other classes as well, which may result in the student not getting good marks on their report card, not getting into that prestigious university, and ultimately, not getting the career of which they dreamed of. Allowing students to take the classes they want, would not only grant them the ability to drop this one class, but be able to replace it with something they enjoy instead, and if you like the subject, it will motivate you to try harder at it, resulting in better marks, a better attitude, a better school environment and a shot at your dream job. It is common knowledge to say that, when someone chooses to something they are motivated, they take those extra steps to work harder because they have a passion for it, when someone is forced to do something they are reluctant, they’re hesitant, they don’t want to do it. The only reason they are doing it is because of the fact that punishments are laid down behind the task they are being told to do, but if the student actually enjoys doing…

Have you ever had to choose between to excellent schools? I have to because now I am going to high school. I am comparing and contrasting the Stem high school and Carolina Day School. Using your eyes to see, is like using your nose to smell, or using your ears to hear. You get my point? Our senses do so many things for us, it is easy to take that for granted. Our senses and body contribute to who we are mentally and physically. Doctors, nurses, surgeons, really anyone in the medical field spend their lives, changing people's lives and may not even know it.…

But what if it 's not what is being taught but how it is being presented to the students. The way teachers are teaching could be the problem, Ballantine states “The best teaching methods are always those that are chosen by the student, not the teacher. Many students prefer learning methods in which they can apply their knowledge practically. Students learn effectively through hands-on experience.” I believe that if there were more variety of classes students would be more…

America is losing its competitive edge in math education; we are now the 32nd nation in the world in terms of math education. Only 40% of children in the fourth grade are even considered proficient in this area of study; only 35% of 8th graders are considered proficient or above proficient. Not only are science, technology, engineering, and math teachers scarce, but out of the ones that are practicing, few have the resources to inspire students to pursue the STEM field, or even apply the knowledge. However, this is not the only issue. Women and minorities are groups that are simply not identifiable within the STEM field.…

Albert Einstein once said, “The person who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The person who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever seen before.” This is a popular quote by a very famous person that many people tell their kids and students. If adults are telling young people to be themselves and go their own way then why should every student take a standardized test?…

Failures of No Child Left Behind Act Education should be personalized and not standardized. Today’s education is build on the principles of the Industrial Revolution, which focused on creating and producing identical “consumer” products cheaply and ensuring quality control. This is why the No Child Left Behind Act is detrimental to our education system today. It has handed education into the hands of the federal government. The government has taken great management over the education and is limiting creativity and imagination which inspires children to learn.…

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an educational crusade in the United States that fine points what kindergarteners through senior high school students need to know in English and math, by the end of each grade. In 2010 California adopted the Common Core State Standards and chose to align with one of the two multi-state testing consortia funded by the administration. California signed up with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, which produced a testing system known as the SBAC. That group, as well as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (which produced the PARCC assessments), contracted with leading testing companies, including Pearson, the Educational Testing Service, and CTB/McGraw-Hill,…

Diane Ravitch and John Gatto both set up their arguments to have a message mirroring each other, in that the current system that schools have in order to teach kids is failing and needs to be refined. Diane Ravitch approaches this view in contrast to Gatto. She builds her argument around the solution that children should be educated in such a way that sets them up for citizenhood during and after high school. Gatto’s approach takes a different view in which children are responsible for their own education and it should be left up to the individual students on whether or not they wish to “take away an education rather than merely receive a schooling,” (Gatto, page 115). Both build up to this belief through their separate experiences within the schooling system.…

In those electives comes study breaks, performing arts, and physical education. Instead of taking fun classes, I believe our school system should consider making it a requirement to take classes on important stuff like how to take the ACT. The ACT test is a must when applying to college. “According to the latest results of the organization’s standardized college entrance test, only 1 in 4 students qualify as prepared for college in all four subject areas: English, reading, math and science” (webley). So, instead of a PE class we can study, learn, and practice for the ACT.…
