Growing up going to public school in Texas there is one thing every child fears more than any potential monsters in their closets. The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness or STAAR test is every kids worst nightmare. The STAAR test is three days of state testing that you seem to prepare for the entire year. The hardest test always seemed to be the English exam due to one very stressful section. The writing portion made me a nervous wreck. It was so hard to write because there was always a broad prompt and your grade depended on what one person, who was probably already miserable from reading hundreds of other papers thought of yours. The writing section of the English STAAR exam led to a life of being not so fond of writing.

We had to wait two to three weeks for a small group of people to read every child in our grades paper, grade it and send it back. If you failed you get to do the whole process over again. After the two to three weeks our teacher handed us each an envelope with our results inside. Everyone in the room was an absolute wreck hoping they passed. I ripped open my envelope and looked at my results and I saw I had received a 80/100. The amount of joy I felt in that moment, I believe is similar to what professional football players feel when they win the Super Bowl. In my mind there was confetti falling from the ceiling and fans cheering my name. I could finally relax, at least for now. Soon enough I would be sitting write in front of another English STAAR test about to write another paper on yet another extremely broad and boring topic.
The English STAAR test basically single handedly created a dislike for writing at a young age. Though as I’ve gotten older and received more direct prompts my liking of writing has increased a lot, I still have the negative memories of taking the STAAR test. I still have nightmares of receiving that testing booklet. The STAAR test created a dislike for writing that I am still slowly reversing to this very
