They tried and fought hard many battles and always came out victorious. Only though through the help of a courageous warrior named Beowulf. He is known through many lands of fighting and conquering beasts and other warriors. He is known for having strength and a spirit of those who are known as gods. As if he was blessed at birth, no beast, no injury could hurt him. His name brought joy to those who wished for aid in their lives. He had fought in many battles such as the battle with a beast named Grendel who had terrified, eaten, and repainted the walls of the mead hall with the color of red in the land of the Geats. No weapon could hurt Grendel, anything that anyone used would be useless. Beowulf, instead of using weaponry, had came at the beast with his own hands. He had no idea if that could work considering that Grendel was a gigantic beast. However, in order for him to truly know the the answer he had to take that risk. He had grabbed onto Grendel’s arm, Grendel had no idea what had happened. “His mind was flooded with fear-but nothing could take his talons and himself from the tight Hard grip.”(416, line 276) Beowulf could tell by the fearful screams and from the pain that he was causing Grendel, that his risk had paid off. It tells of how a young girl named Emily, who is currently in Argentina because of her father not wanting her around anymore. Ever since Emily’s father had gotten with a new woman he said “ Emily’s presence, would be inconvenient now.” (99) Her mother even disrespects her by telling her that she would never be mistaken for an Argentine. All because she had fell asleep before dessert. She currently is home schooled by her mother. At times they head to Uco Valley, where there is an elevated spot for her to lay down and sing songs she makes up or heard. She is soon introduced to a man named Daniel and Maria his wife. Daniel is in charge of keeping robbers, killers and rapists out of the vineyard. He had three dogs they are bullmastiffs and he has one more dog “some combination of pit bull, Rottweiler, German shepherd, and wolf, an animal as cruel and vicious as any animal on earth.”(100) Daniel had named it Blackheart. Emily’s mother is very afraid of Blackheart and warns Emily to not open the gate. Blackheart is trained to kill. Curiosity has Emily and continues to have her think that she can make the dog nice. One night when Daniel is away and Maria and her mother are out, Emily wants to see Blackheart. She is assured that he won’t attack and opens the gate.
