One mother of a former child soldier stated “[t]he townspeople would come and beat him. … There was a time when everybody gathered around him, wanting to beat him up. They said they wanted him to change, I don't know which change they wanted” (Morris 1). This could be interpreted to mean that the returning of child soldiers gave a lot of people doubt that they would be good again, which in turn suggests that people automatically assumed that child soldiers would never change. Many people misjudged child soldiers at the time. They failed to see that child soldiers were trying to change into a better a person than they were during the war, and by having the courage to come home and face their own people is their first step in proving that they
