Residential homes are accountable for over eighteen percent of the greenhouse gases in the environment. First, the materials used in residential homes are much less environmentally friendly than those used in tiny homes such as CO2 consumption and lumber used. Second, the amount of water used in residential homes is exponentially larger than the water used in the tiny home water catchment system. Tiny home, being much smaller use a lot less energy with a fraction of the light bulbs needed to light residential homes and less appliances. Tiny homes are also a great financial alternative for those who can not afford a residential home or can not pay rent. Tiny homes eliminate the plumbing used in the toilet and the amount of water used for every flush. The average tiny home will have either a composting toilet that has to be emptied regularly or an incinerating toilet that burns all the waste. This eliminates the water usage used to flush the toilet and the water used in the plumbing throughout the home. Tiny homes also use a system to catch rainwater and filter it. This rain catchment system is a special gutter that collects rain, filters it, and stores it in large tanks inside the home. Although this helps to lower water consumption, “tiny house living is not without its challenges. Water shortages with 20-40 gallon tanks can be tough, especially in August” (Ozery). This shows that tiny house living is not for everyone and it is a struggle at points. Tiny homes are planned to be used in states of emergency such as earthquakes or floods where people 's homes are temporarily or permanently uninhabitable. Tiny homes will serve as temporary housing for those who can not go back to their homes and can not find another place to stay. Many cities and states around the country and world are starting to build tiny homes for this situation. For example cities in Southern California such as Los Angeles and San Francisco are starting to implement plans for tiny homes to be used as emergency housing after an earthquake, which are typical and bound to happen on an area such as Southern California. Other areas similar to these, in that natural disasters occur regularly, are starting to build tiny homes to be used in these situations. These tiny homes could help to save lives during the havoc of these disasters. Also people might see the advantages and perks of tiny homes after staying in one and might decide to go green and buy a tiny house for a full time residence. Another use for a tiny home is homing for those without a home. Across the country different cities and charities are starting to build tiny home communities for the homeless. Cities with high poverty and unemployment rates are starting to help the homeless with different communities and centers for the homeless to live.
