Racial profiling is the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense. Most racial profiling can also be known as being prejudice or the preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual opinion. A rather common example of racial profiling would be “driving while black” or also known as DWB. Driving while black is when police officers target African American drivers for traffic stops plainly because they believe that they are more likely to be involved in criminal activity. Although it is illegal police officers are allowed the right to stop and search vehicles if they truly believe the driver is trafficking illegal drugs or any weapons. If you were to ask any right-minded person what they think about racial profiling they would say that it is unjust and un-American. Even the strictest law enforcement would be forced to say this act is patently unfair in many ways. For example for the MPS or also known as the Minneapolis Public Schools they have decided to reduce the “non-violent suspension gap”. (Frohnen 2014) It seemed that more African American and Hispanic students are being suspended from Minneapolis schools for nonviolent offenses than white students. Of course people wanted there to be an investigation from the Justice Department to confirm whether racial bias is to blame for the disparities tabulated in terms of race. The Department of Education Office for Civil Rights had decided to investigate the situation and came to an agreement with the MPS. The agreement was that MPS must reduce the disproportionality between black and brown students and their white peers every year for the next four years.
