167,227 spectators attended the 2017 Kentucky Derby. 16.2 million more people watched the derby in the comfort of their own home. More than 16.4 million people in total witnessed 20 abused, drugged, and injured horses run 1.4 miles for ¨entertainment purposes¨. Weighing over 1,000 pounds, horses are supported by fragile ankles, and covered in skin three times more sensitive than humans. Despite these factors, horses are still forced to lap around hard-packed dirt tracks at speeds of the average city while in critical condition.
